This company, quite simply, displays little regard for OH&S protocols (or at least it didn't on the day we toured). The day we visited was quite rough with a pronounced swell overlapped with a vigorous chop. I witnessed people being loaded from the pontoon into a lurching boat from the bow, and without assistance; the children's section was being washed with dangerous swells; the gang plank from the launch to the pontoon was adrift and swinging dangerously; and when we finally cast off from the pontoon crew members were placed between the launch and pontoon stanchions. I have worked as a deckhand on fishing boats, and during the trip I was talking to an ex-RAN man and we both agreed that the standards of care were well below accepted standards. The trip was cut short, and many of the promised activities did not eventuate. No compensation only apologies and appeals to our "understanding". The crew were great people, and they deserve much better. This trip was a major disappointment, and I would advise intending travellers to look elsewhere.
Brilliant day out overall highly recommend. One thing to be mindful of is the crossing out can be very rough I have never been sea sick but was on this trip, along with most of the other guests I even took a sickness tablet when I boarded it didn’t seem to work, if you know a trick to save yourself from this then definitely do it! Pontoon was great all the snorkel equipment and seating plus a few loungers were ample, it was not a full trip so we were very lucky to have lots of space. We were travelling with a 13 year old as well and this was perfect do him to snorkel all day and come in and out the water freely onto the platform which is monitored all day by snorkel crew, have to say they did a great job looking after everyone including the non swimmers etc The reef was beautiful plenty to see, even saw a reef shark! Full of colour lots of fish and Wally the wrasse made an appearance. Staff are really helpful and look after all the guests well throughout the day including the sickness on the trip out. My partner did the introductory dive and said it was an amazing experience also. Food for lunch and cakes for afternoon tea were ample, nice selection for all. Tea and coffee available all day was a bonus and cold drinks were available to purchase onboard. Don’t forget to take towels we forgot but purchased them round corner from the wharf before boarding.
Cannot rate this day trip highly enough! Crew were amazing! Boat was very comfortable, pontoon was awesome but the reef…..ahhhh….the reef is beyond belief! So many fish and the coral was outstanding. The “snorkel safari” was an amazing adventure too!
Superb day on the reef, largely due to the very attentive and professional crew. My 78 year old mum required assistance to navigate the stairs and gantries; a crew member would appear without prompting to aid her each time. The fast-cat and pontoon were clean and well fitted to accommodate all passengers without crowding. Assistance was readily given for all activities they offered along with great explanations of safety, reef protocols and rules. The food served had everyone going back for seconds and thirds, yummy. This was my second reef visit with Reef Magic, I highly recommend their company to any and all. Special thank you to crew member Jodie for her dedicated attention, making my mums outing stress free and very memorable, thank you ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
From the moment we stepped on board, Reef Magic was an amazing experience. Communication of boarding instructions and relevant information was perfect prior to departure. The trip out was smooth and we were kept occupied with marine and snorkeling presentations. On arrival, it was a quick process to don wetsuits and snorkeling gear so we were straight into the water. The variety of fish and coral within the Marine World area is fantastic and seeing Wally, the Maori Wrasse was spectacular. My teenage kids had a great time in and out of the water and we were all impressed by the quality of the lunch (salads, cold meats, fresh prawns and 3 hot dishes) and snacks throughout the day. I added on a drift snorkeling tour around the outer reef which was an absolute highlight of my trip. Thanks to Michelle, an expert marine biologist who made the tour so informative and interesting. A fantastic all round experience and we would definitely highly recommend a trip to Marine World with Reef Magic. If I could give 6 stars on Trip Advisor, I would!
If you are currently reading this review in search of a great trip out to the Great Barrier Reef, please do not hesitate to book this trip. From the moment we got onto the Reef Magic boat, the day could not have been any more perfect. The trip out to the Reef was very relaxing with free water, coffee and tea, and some morning snacks. While I am very fortunate not to get seasick, it is advisable if you do to take a tablet as it can be a bit rocky on the way over. Also if it's windy be sure to bring a jumper or small blanket as it does get a bit chilly. Once we got to the pontoon, we were ecstatic to see how large it was with ample tables, lounge chairs, and heaps of staff to assist anyway they could. The snorkeling area was massive and my friends and I spent the majority of the day in the water as it was so incredible and mesmerizing. The highlight of the day was the lunch. OMG was the food good. There were several hot options along with salad, fruit, fresh bread, prawns, and etc etc etc. I have done a whole lot of boat trips where I have left hungry and cranky due to the lack of food (snorkeling all day can be pretty exhausting) but this was not the case for Reef Magic. My friend who was vegan was even given a special vegan meal (kudos to the staff member whose name I didn't get for assisting my friend and I. She was so much help in ensuring my vegan friend had plenty to eat). Add into this the fact you got to eat the delicious food right on side of the Great Barrier Reef, we were all on cloud 9 and all fueled up for a second snorkel! They do advise letting the company know you are vegan when booking which we hadn't thought to do. All of the staff on board were excellent, all were very friendly, engaging, and really did everything in their power to ensure everyone had a fabulous day. After five hours at the reef, we were brought back on the boat for an afternoon tea! More fresh fruit and the most delicious carrot cake we've ever had (if you can't tell already this tour really prioritizes serving delicious food). Overall a 12/10 day. Amazing staff, a gorgeous pontoon and huge area for snorkeling, and delicious food to keep you full all day! If you have any doubts about choosing this tour (from the tons of other Cairns tours), please do not hesitate to choose Reef Magic as you won't be disappointed and sure won't leave hungry! Thank you all for such a magnificent day!
Great day out on the reef. Nice to spend four or so hours at a beautiful spot of coral reef. Staff friendly and marine biologists informative and helpful. Worth getting a personal snorkelling tour around the coral. Plenty of activities to do such as glass bottom boat and submarine. Nice buffet lunch. Can’t fault it. We had a great day.
We headed out on the boat, having taking our sea sickness medicine. None of us got sick, however half the boat did, so even if you don’t think you need it, I recommend you take it! Smooth ride out and loved that there was only 90 people and felt spacious. After we arrived onto the pontoon, it was all very well organised. We collected our wet suits and snorkelling gear (all included) and went straight out. The first look into the water and I shouted “this is AMAZING!” There we’re beautiful fish everywhere, we also saw two reef sharks. We then enjoyed the glass bottom boat tour, although didn’t see too many fish. We all enjoyed the buffet lunch and meatballs and rolls were great for the kids. Morning and afternoon tea slices were delicious. We went out for more snorkelling and it was great having a photographer to take photos of you in the water (extra cost totally worth it!) Our whole family throughly enjoyed this. If you come all the way to The Great Barrier Reef, I highly recommend you doing the Outer Reef tour. All staff were friendly and helpful. Thanks for a once in a lifetime experience!!
